Our homes are full of a lot of things. Too many things. There are many things we use daily and are quite useful. There are also many things we rarely use and are of absolutely no use to us anymore. Take a walk around your home and see what things you notice from this list that you are ready to get rid of today…meaning you’re ready to donate, recycle, sell or throw out. Notice how you feel when you start removing the unnecessary items from your various rooms.
Bedroom/Closets
- Socks with holes
- Bathing suits that have lost their elasticity or material is worn through
- Broken Jewellery
- Jewellery you never wear
- Earrings that don’t have a pair anymore
- Clothes that don’t fit properly
- Old bridesmaid dresses
- Old formal dresses
- Your wedding dress – if you’re not planning to pass it on to a family member
- Purses you never use
- Extra buttons in little plastic bags from clothes you purchased long ago
- Old worn out shoes
- Beautiful shoes you never wear because they give you blisters
- Old Running shoes
- Old Glasses
- Promotional T-shirts that are way too big
- Plastic hangers you get from clothing stores
- Scarves you never wear
- Warn out bras and underwear
- Sports bras that might look cute but offer absolutely no support
- Old pillows
- Belts that no longer fit or you never wear
Kitchen/Pantry
- Multiples of spatulas
- Duplicates of peelers
- Small kitchen appliances you never use
- Expired food
- Tupperware containers with missing lids
- Novelty kitchen gadgets you never use
- Plastic takeout cutlery
- Takeout condiment samples
- Cookbooks you never use
- Herbs and spices you never use
- Specialty teas you never drink
- Items in your freezer that you don’t know how long they’ve been in there – label from now on
Bathroom
- Hair elastics that have lost their elasticity
- Hair accessories you never wear
- Expired medication
- Old makeup
- Old toiletries
- Dried up nail polish
- Extra syringes and cups that come with children’s medicines
- Expired sunscreen
- Old brushes that the little nobs have all fallen off
- Mini hotel toiletries you took home because they were free, not because you want to use them
- Hair products you no longer use
Office
- Pens that don’t work
- Markers that have dried up
- Books you don’t plan on reading again
- Old Textbooks
- Address labels from your old address
- Lanyards and name tags from past events
Paper
- Past wedding invites
- Past birthday or holiday cards – except a few that might hold sentimental value
- Take out menus
- Old travel brochures
- Magazines you’ve already read
- Keys that you don’t know what they’re for
- Unnecessary receipts
- Manuals for things you don’t have anymore
- Coupons that have expired
- Old calendars
- Phone books
- Empty boxes – flatten and recycle
- Old day planners
Electronics/Entertainment/Technology
- DVDs you never watch anymore
- Scratched DVDs
- Old board games you and/or your family never play
- Old charging cords to phones you no longer have
- CD’s – transfer them into MP3 files on your computer
- Cords that don’t belong to anything you currently own
- Old phones and phone covers/cases
- Delete apps you don’t use on your phone
- Delete old texts
- Delete junk mail
- Delate and unsubscribe to store emails you never shop at
- Computer games you or your kids have outgrown
- Remotes that have no purpose
Kids
- Unloved stuffed animals
- Clothes that are too small
- Clothes that they don’t like wearing because they’re uncomfortable
- Books they’ve outgrown
- Kid’s art projects that are piling up – Keep a few of the really special ones then take photos of the rest and make a beautiful photo book
- Shoes that are too small/you don’t need to hold onto for a younger sibling
- Games/puzzles with missing pieces
- Recalled baby items
- Old sippy cups, plates, cutlery, bibs or water bottles they no longer use
