A KonMari Inspired Linen Closet

Today, let’s talk about linen closets.

They’re a place to keep your bedding, towels, perhaps even toiletries. If you’re not careful, it can be a place to stuff and store things you don’t want to think about. I know i’m guilty of trying to stuff old blankets and flannel bed sheets as high as I could onto the top shelf of our linen closet and it was sometimes hard to even close the door. Fitted bed sheets would often look like a big round ball instead of folded flat. I didn’t always have the patience for trying to fold everything nice and uniform. Linens were often piled up in disarray.

I recently did an overhaul of our linen closet and am so happy with the results. What I realized was that we had too many pillow cases, old extra bedding, baby blankets and pillows that weren’t being used.

After removing the unnecessary excess, what we actually use and need is what remains. Since we have 3 beds in our home, we have the bedding that is currently being used and then an extra set for each room. The extra set comes in handy when sheets are being cleaned in the laundry or if the kids happen to get sick or have a bathroom accident in the middle of the night.

If you have family or friends that live out of town and often stay the night, you may choose to have an extra set of bedding for guests. It all depends on your situation so you’ll need to figure out what makes the most sense for you.

I really like using boxes to contain my sheets because it helps everything remain neat. Plus, I’m more likely to take the time to fold things up nice and neatly after washing them so I can keep everything nicely organized. The boxes I currently use are SKUBB boxes from Ikea. Each pack contains a total of six boxes in three different sizes. I have found them to be quite handy to use in different places around our home.

Let’s be honest, folding a fitted sheet has never been something I’ve enjoyed…until now, because I finally know how to do it properly. Check out the video below to see how simple it really is.

Thanks to Marie Kondo and her book, The Life Changing magic of Tidying Up because I am so much more motivated to fold my clothing, towels and bedding into rectangles so they stack nicely. If I can do this, you can absolutely do this too!

Take a peek at your linen closet and see if you have any extra pillow cases or bedding that hasn’t been used in a while.  If that’s the case, it might be time to pair down. Also, if your fitted sheets are wrapped up in a ball like formation, try folding them using the KonMari Method.

Have a great week!
