30 Day Minimalism Game (Part 1)

465 Things in 30 days

Ryan Nicodemus and Joshua Fields Millburn from the blog www.theminimalists.com came up with a 30 Day Minimalism Game (#MinsGame) to make minimizing your things a bit more fun. The way the game works is you find one thing to remove from your home on the first day, two things on the second, three on the third and so on until you’ve removed 30 things from your home on the 30th day. When you complete the game, you will have removed a total of 465 things from your home in a month.

Days 1-15

I’m halfway through the 30 Day Game and I’ve removed a total of 120 items so far. I’ve included photos of these items below. I didn’t find the first half of this game to be challenging as I could easily find items that we haven’t used in a long time. Things like toys, clothes, and winter accessories the kids have outgrown. I found my pottery from when I took wheel classes 15 years ago. All of my original bowls and mugs have been sitting in a box in our fruit cellar and since I don’t use them at all, they were an easy item to pass along. We also had a big bin of DVD’s in our basement and since we mostly watch movies or shows on Netflix these days, we found no value in holding onto our old DVDs.

who’s up for the challenge?

I’d encourage you to give this game a try if you enjoy a challenge. Find a friend to do it with and encourage each other to make it through the whole 30 days. If you’re a competitive person, see who is able to last the longest. Make it fun. The purpose is to help you clear out the clutter in your home. I’ve noticed that I am now always on the lookout for things that we no longer use but have been holding onto for a while. It keeps getting easier for me to let go of items in our home that no longer serve a purpose for our family.

I hope you’ll give it a try. Wish me luck over the next 15 days!

  1. Just returned from Arizona after being away for three months. Have unloaded the motorcoach and am looking for a place for everything. Like this idea. Starting your challenge today!

  2. Jillian, I am totally doing this now! Watch out! Day One is tomorrow…and the item is already chosen. Just sold my treadmill and will start the decluttering movement in our house!
