The Simple Act of Accepting Help

I’m fortunate to live down the street from my parents. For some, you may be thinking…that’s way too close, but it works for us. 🙂

The other month, my husband, Chris, had been out of town for a few days so I’d been holding down the fort at home with all the parenting duties while he was away.

My mom offered to come over one evening right before bedtimes to help get the kids to sleep. The kids love when she reads them stories and sings to them, so I usually don’t think twice about accepting these types of offers.

One of the loveliest benefits was that while she was reading them books upstairs, I was able to tidy up the mess I had left in our kitchen and around our main floor. It didn’t take too long to tidy but the impact it had on how the kids and I felt when we came downstairs the next morning to a clutter free environment was huge. I didn’t feel behind before I begin my day and that felt pretty great.

We are often quick to turn down help from others for no reason other than thinking we can do it all on our own. Since becoming a parent, I’ve definitely realized you can’t do it all on your own. Even more so when you’re completely exhausted or feeling under the weather.

Accepting help doesn’t need to be seen as a sign of weakness but instead as an invitation to let others into your world. Where have you been closing yourself off to help from others? Or on the flip side, how can you help out a friend or family member who may need some extra help? Don’t be afraid to ask or offer help. You might be surprised at how much that someone might really be needing it.
